![]() ![]() heart rate straps) are using Suunto’s proprietary ANT variant which aren’t compatible with anything else. Now, I do want to point out that while this is a Suunto ‘accessory’, it’s the only Suunto accessory that will work with other ANT+ devices (like your Garmin). It’ll simply download from any device you have (i.e. Like the Mac, on Windows once you’ve got the drivers automatically installed, you’ll use the Garmin ANT Agent software just as you normally would. Once it finishes up being installed – it’s the same old ANT USB Stick 2 (ANT2).įor all you Mac folks, I was able to also download workouts without issue using the Garmin ANT Agent and in this case, a Garmin FR610 (but again, any Garmin watch will work). Thus it doesn’t look any different to the Garmin software than Garmin’s own stick.Īll you do is simply plug in the stick, give it a few seconds to grab the USB drivers from Windows Update (I’ve tried it on Windows Vista and Windows 7) – and you’re good to go! You’ll note that initially when it first starts looking for drivers, it calls it the Suunto Movestick Mini (it normally comes with the Suunto Quest watch). So the Suunto stick is ANT2, which means that despite being Suunto it’s really just like any other ANT+ stick under the covers. Each channel is limited to one ANT+ accessory. Or – if you’ve got multiplayer type applications taking advantage of it. But when it comes to applications that may leverage the USB stick for real-time data transfer – such as TrainerRoad – the extra channels become really important if you have multiple ANT+ accessories (like Speed, Cadence, Power Meters, Heart Rate, etc…). In common scenarios like downloading your data, it doesn’t really matter. You can see the flavors on the back of virtually all sticks in tiny writing – “USB2 Wireless USB Stick”ĪNT1 had a limited number of channels (4), whereas the newer ANT2 stick has more channels (8). Well ok, it left my laptop to take these photos:īut, you may be asking how is it that a Suunto branded stick works with Garmin watches? See, when it comes to ANT+ USB sticks, there are basically two flavors – ANT1 (USB1) and ANT2 (USB2). That includes plane flights, to and from work, and all assortment of wanderings around town. In fact, aside from a few tests in other computers – it hasn’t left my laptop since the package arrived. And the best thing is that with being so small, I can leave it in my laptop 24×7. Just check it out in comparison to your normal ANT+ stick:Īs you can see, it’s tiny. I immediately ordered one and waited for the horribly oversized box from Amazon to arrive.īut I don’t think I was prepared for just how small it is once I got it all unboxed. So back in January when I was alerted to a much smaller USB ANT+ stick that could replace your existing Garmin ANT+ USB stick that you use with your current Forerunners I was pretty jazzed to give it a whirl. She’ll still likely try to steal it while giving me that innocent ‘I’m not guilty’ smile. ![]() But it doesn’t keep her from stealing my ANT stick. Somehow that paint scheme she did on hers only works one way in attempting to prevent me from stealing her stick. Having broken off various USB doo-dads from my computer before (as well as smart cards sticking out the side), breakage is a reality, and with it hanging off 1-2” into the wild blue yonder, it’s a prime target for a grade-A fail.Īnd I suppose a third issue is The Girl stealing it. ![]() Second, is the issue of it simply breaking off. But, I’ve since shared how I solved that problem. First up is the issue of simply losing the darn thing in my backpack or around the house. If you’re like me and are constantly on a laptop – there are really two minor issues that I have with the Garmin USB stick that I use to download workouts from my Forerunner to my computer. ![]() ![]() This is where the wider gamut of the display is figured out - it learns the range of colors that can be displayed. Profiling: this involves a series of tests using a hardware colorimeter that accurately record how your (now calibrated) display responds when given known color values, i.e. Doing Intel Command Center > Display > Color > Restore to Original Colors sets this LUT back to defaults, i.e. The calibration values are stored in the 8-bit graphics chip video Lookup Table (video LUT). After calibration, you'll see changes to screen temp (warm/cool) and perceived contrast, but not color saturation. These calibrations will affect the display system-wide, even in non-color-managed apps. Note these have nothing to do with color gamuts - they're just adjustments of how grey tones are displayed in all steps from black (0) to white (255). There are standards for tone curves such as sRGB and Gamma 2.2. In simplified terms, there are 2 steps to configuring your display for proper use by color-managed apps, which tools like Displa圜AL can do for you in one operation:Ĭalibraton: in this step, you set preferred screen brightness, white point and tone curve. The downside is needing to rely on apps that know what to do with this wide gamut, i.e. It will be able to display some colors that you've probably never seen before on a laptop screen. Which is an awesome thing for such a thin display with tiny bezels. Your UHD panel covers 100% sRGB, 100% AdobeRGB and 93% DCI-P3 gamuts iirc. That's just how human eyesight works: we still see the apple as red whether lit by sunlight or moonlight, even though the colors are objectively different. Remember finally that there's no such thing as a 'correct' white-point, only colors that are accurately rendered relative to a given color of white which you must choose yourself for your own purposes & environment. That's just one of the main differences between Windows and Mac OS. Windows system and non-color-managed apps (like Windows Photos) are always going to look over-saturated on a properly calibrated wide-gamut display because Windows assumes everything is sRGB only. Remember that the display profile will only be effective in color-managed apps like LR or PS, and you also need to make sure that the display profile and calibration settings are properly loaded - again Displa圜AL has the best loader, don't rely on the Windows one as this is often misconfigured. People often skip this step for some reason. There's no sense trying to guess with your own eyes when you can have an objective measurement like this. If you calibrate with Displa圜AL (and you should) as the final step after it creates your display profile and you install it, use the Verification tab to measure the profile's accuracy and create a detailed report with graphs and tables. I'm a photographer, so my screen needs to show the correct colors to me. Does anyone have any tips for me how I can be sure the colors/saturation is correct? And I guess comparing to my phone (Huawei P30 Pro) is not a solution, as I don't know if this screen is anywhere close to 'calibrated'. Because before this I had a crap laptop with a bad non-calibrated screen. I don't know if it's the screen or if it's me/my eyes. I also went to Intel Graphic Command Center and pressed te "Restore to original colors"-button.īut still, the colors look very saturated to me. I removed Dell Premier Color, removed the calibrated profiles and selected the 'Premier Color sRGB 6500'-profile in Windows 10 control panel > color management. ![]() After some research and testing with Premier Color and a rented xrite i1 calibration tool, I'm still not sure my colors are correct. Hey, I got my recently (UHD No-touch screen), the colors looked very vibrant. ![]() ![]() ![]() This policy has been reiterated by the Icelandic Minister for Foreign Affairs in a note to the US Government. Without nuclear weaponsĪ condition for the authorization of US submarine visits is that they will not carry nuclear weapons, emphasizes the Icelandic government – and points to the country's security policy of no nuclear weapons on Icelandic territories. This will likely happen in connection with the NATO exercise Dynamic Mongoose, which started on Monday (only in Norwegian). This is the alliance's annual anti-submarine exercise in the High North – of which Iceland has the role of primary host nation this year. The first submarine will visit in the near future and will be serviced just outside the coast rather than making a port call, it is reported. The frequency of visits will depend on the need at any given time," writes the government. "These service visits will contribute to strengthening the continuous and active submarine surveillance of allied countries, which ensures better situational awareness and increases the safety of underwater infrastructure such as submarine cables in the waters around Iceland. The background is that Iceland wants to support increased surveillance and response capacity among allies in the North Atlantic. Each report contains a full design history of the ship, an extensive list of major contractors and subcomponent suppliers, and a wealth of information on the ship’s performance and operational capabilities. It details the market impact of numerous key programs, including the Franco-Italian FREMM class frigate, the Queen Elizabeth class aircraft carrier, and the SSN-774 Virginia class submarine. These submarines may not match the latest technical standards set by the U.S., Britain, France, and Russia, but they do offer an impressive level of capability – one that is slowly being increased as each successive design modification is applied.įorecast International’s Warships Forecast covers the key submarine, aircraft carrier, surface combatant, amphibious warfare, and underway replenishment programs that will dominate the warship industry over the next decade and beyond. Forecast International’s forecast of SSBN construction is based on this assessment.Īll this confusion aside, one thing that cannot be ignored is that the People’s Republic of China reportedly has an estimated 16 nuclear-powered submarines in service, with more under construction. Two separate flotillas of SSBNs, one oriented east and the other southwest, would be logical, suggesting that a fleet of 10 modern SSBNs may well be envisioned. In retrospect, this expectation reflected a narrow vision of Chinese strategic interests and did not allow for the fact that those interests include many potential targets other than the United States. ![]() The appearance of four in-service SSBNs in the Southern Fleet came as a surprise, since conventional wisdom had suggested the nuclear-powered boats would be concentrated in the Northern Fleet. The only association between the shipyard and submarines appears to be an unofficial Chinese blog that added the words “and nuclear submarines” to a company-supplied photograph of the new facility. It is almost universally described as a nuclear submarine construction facility, but the reality is that the new hulls are oriented toward merchant ship construction and the first ships to leave the shipyard were an offshore oil platform and a nuclear offshore power barge. The expansion of Bohai Shipyard in Huludao provides a good example of the problems inherent in interpreting Chinese information. Thus, the usual tests that can be applied to unconfirmed information are less effective when applied to People’s Republic of China naval programs. ![]() This carries over into official reports, where concepts or developments are stated without indication as to whether the reports in question are just repetitions of unofficial media, speculation, or simply quotations from sources that are not yet available to the public. The big problem is that little distinction is made between observed evidence and suppositions. Often, guesswork and theories or hypotheses are quoted as fact, without the tenuous basis behind them being made clear. The lack of valid and verified information is a vivid reminder that the construction of Chinese nuclear submarines is shrouded in mystery. The nuclear submarine program of China’s People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) is fraught with contradictory information, speculation, and propaganda. Bergé got Yves out of hospital and back to work, helping to set up the label whose three sensuously entwined initials would revolutionise Parisian fashion in the 60s, scandalise the world in the 70s and stamp themselves imperiously across the 80s.įrom the outset, their roles were clear. Shortly after his Dior début in 1958, he had met Buffet's then-boyfriend, Pierre Bergé, and embarked on a personal and professional relationship which would endure to the end of his life. Exiled from his Avenue Montaigne paradise, he fell apart and was admitted to mental hospital a bare three weeks after reporting for duty: a has-been at 24.īut Yves was not alone. The rapturous reviews were soon followed by doubting ones, and two years later the House of Dior took advantage of Saint Laurent's military call-up to have their boy wonder replaced. It was the emotional fashion binge of all time." Womens Wear Daily's correspondent was more specific, and less charitable – she saw "an ugly, ungainly, overgrown boy with thick glasses, and so horribly shy he couldn't take his eyes off the floor".Ĭharged, at 21, with safeguarding the future of the world's most successful fashion house, Saint Laurent began well: after his first, rapturously received collection, the International Herald Tribune's correspondent reported: "Everybody was crying. L'Express hailed him as France's latest enfant triste – another of the country's new wave of melancholy prodigies, like novelist Françoise Sagan and painter Bertrand Buffet. Saint Laurent became an object of immediate fascination: quiet, timid, with neatly parted schoolboy hair, anxious eyes lurking behind thick glasses and a frail body encased in a tight black suit. Into the limelight: Yves Saint Laurent with models in 1962. But that sheltered, happy existence was soon to be shattered, with Dior's premature death in 1957 pushing his seemingly reluctant successor into the spotlight. As played by Pierre Niney, he is at once violently demanding and intensely shy, pampered and secure – as he had been in Algeria – in a world of adoring women. Lespert's film begins shortly after, with Yves enthroned as Dior's crown prince. By the age of 18, he had won an international design competition (beating future rival Karl Lagerfeld) and been hired by fashion's reigning Sun King, Christian Dior. Outwardly Saint Laurent led a charmed life. It's not hard to understand the fascination with the YSL story, a saga that blends wild public success with private suffering. The move provoked an immediate storm of protest, and a surprisingly long-lived backlash: last autumn, Parisian store Colette fell out with the label over T-shirts which bore the slogan: AIN'T LAURENT WITHOUT YVES. Saint Laurent himself died of brain cancer in 2008 four years later Hedi Slimane – first hired as a menswear designer back in 1996 – returned to the house and immediately shortened the label's name to Saint Laurent. Since the late 90s some of the biggest names in fashion, from Lanvin's Alber Elbaz to Tom Ford, have spent periods at the label's helm ultimately even the all-conquering Ford was defeated – simply, it seemed, not Yves enough. It is the latest round in the battle for the designer's legacy. His biopic will focus on Yves during the years when he accomplished his definitive works (the decade ending his triumphant Ballet Russes collection in 1976) and Bonello is playing up his version as the "unauthorised" story – one which will portray Yves's truth, rather than Pierre's. Pierre Bergé, Saint Laurent's partner, has granted Lespert access to his extensive archives and last year tweeted his outrage at the rival project: "I hold the moral rights over YSL's work… A trial on the cards?" Still, Bonello has his own heavyweight backer in Kering – the luxury conglomerate which now owns the Yves Saint Laurent label. ![]() In October the second – directed by Bertrand Bonello, best known for the controversial L'Apollonide, or House of Tolerance – will be released. This year will see the release of two films based on his life: the first, actor/director Jalil Lespert's Yves Saint Laurent, is currently topping the French box office, charming audiences with its affectionately human portrait of the man behind the myth. Six decades on, the story of the little boy who played "grand couturier", and who grew up to become the century's most notorious fashion designer, shows no sign of losing its appeal. ![]() |
